Thursday’s Daily Dose

If you have not decided how to spend your weekend, start by enjoying a little relaxation tonight. Instead of worrying about the last day int he work week, focus on the evening directly ahead. 1.  Anong’s Thai Cuisine. Dinner is served from 5:00PM- 9:00PM. Even if you have never tried Thai food you will love what Anong’s has to offer. 2. Imagine Mars!: Hands-on Science. 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM Curious about Curiosity? Wonder no more! Come to the Imagine Mars! Hands-On Science Event at the Albany County Public Library today, August 9th, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This event is in celebration of the landing of the Mars rover, Curiosity. Come and have fun, learn about space, and win prizes that are out of this world!

Ongoing Activities All Afternoon

• View the constellations in our GIANT crawl-in planetarium
• Have your picture taken with our Summer Alien Mascot (bring your own camera)
• Free ice cream for children every hour on the hour
• Complete the Mars trivia quiz and Constellation Word Scramble and win extra raffle tickets

2:00 – 3:00 Open to children ages 12 and under

• Video presentations:
* Launch of the Mars rover, Curiosity – November, 2011
* “Seven Minutes” – NASA’s landing plan simulation
* Footage of Curiosity’s landing on Mars – August 5, 2012
• View the sun through solar telescopes with experts from LASSO (Laramie Astronomical Society and Space Observers)
• Explore Mars colony displays with teen docents
• Raffle drawing at 3:00 (must be present to win) Winner receives a FREE birthday package for eight from the House of Pounce!

3:00 – 4:00 – Open to teens and children of all ages

• Guest speaker, Bob Steinke, Laramie resident and programmer of the 1990 Mars rover, programmer for Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity, 2001-2003.
• Discussion: What would you need to survive on Mars? What are the dangers and differences from Earth?
• Teens will share and discuss their Mars colony projects. Make your own!
• Make a rubber band rocket and launch it in our garden area.
4:00 – 5:00 – Open to teens and children of all ages

• Video presentations:
* Launch of the Mars rover, Curiosity – November, 2011
* “Seven Minutes” – NASA’s landing plan simulation
* Footage of Curiosity’s landing on Mars – August 5, 2012
* NOVA: “Could there be life on other planets?”
• Discussion: Explore astrobiology, strange life forms on Earth (Yellowstone, in particular) and survival in harsh habitats
• Hands-On experiment: Is It Alive?
• Mars colonies on display
• Raffle drawing (must be present to win) Free UW Planetarium show for the winner and their 59 closest friends!

This is a joint event, combining the talents of the Children’s and Young Adult staff. Deborah Kassner and Laura Prestia, who attended a 3-day NASA workshop and the Mars rover launch in Florida last November, have collaborated to put this program together as part of their commitment to the NASA program to develop interest and excitement about the space program in their community. In addition, LASSO (Laramie Astronomical Society and Space Observers) members have been extremely supportive in sharing their telescopes, knowledge, and enthusiasm about the solar system with our patrons.
