April 3, 2013

The sun is shining here in Laramie and who doesn’t love an early Spring day here in Wyoming. All of us at the LACC hope that your Wednesday is going great and that you enjoy your evening away from the office. Here is your Daily Dose for April 3, 2013!

1. #TheLilyPadProject Exhibit. Running from April 2, 2013 – April 12, 2013 #TheLilyPadProject will be available for viewing at Gallery 234 in the lower level of the Wyoming Union.

“#TheLilyPadProject by Felica Follum will be displayed in Gallery 234 from April 1, 2013 through April 12, 2013. A reception will be held in Gallery 234 on April 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

This exhibit combines social justice-themed fine art and graphic design techniques. #TheLilyPadProject is part of a series dealing with human trafficking and sex slavery. Follum said: “Raising awareness is not about making people feel guilty; it is about empowering others to make an impact in your community and ultimately the world.”

To explain the comparison between lily pads and human trafficking, Follum said: “Though water lilies are beautiful plants, the eco system that they have adapted to survive in is not so glamorous. The root system and underground workings of the plant are extremely complex and parallel the system that supports human trafficking. The most basic, yet significant, comparison is the function of the lily pads. Each pad takes back energy to the root, which would otherwise shrivel up and die.”
